Warner Bros. has just revealed essentially its
entire slate of upcoming DC Movie release dates,
also confirming a ton of other news in the
process. Here’s a brief overview:
Suicide Squad will be the first DC movie after
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, opening in
2016 and confirmed to be directed by Fury
helmer David Ayer.
Wonder Woman will be released in 2017.
The Flash starring Ezra Miller ( The Perks of Being
a Wallflower ) and Aquaman starring Jason
Momoa will be released in 2018.
Shazam starring Dwayne Johnson(The Rock) will be released
in 2019.
Zack Snyder will direct Justice League Part One
for release in 2017 and Justice League Part Two
for release in 2019.
Cyborg and Green Lantern will be released in
2020.
The battle between Marvel Studios and Warner
Bros./DC has been brewing for some time, but
WB took a page out of Marvel’s playbook a
couple of months ago when it announced DC
movie release dates for nine untitled films .
Marvel likes to stake out release dates way in
advance and wait a while until unveiling exactly
what those movies are, but today WB essentially
laid all of its cards on the table by saying exactly
what each of these DC movies will be.
First up will be Suicide Squad, which will be the
first DC movie to be released after Zack Snyder ’s
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, taking the
August 5, 2016 slot. This is actually a pretty
smart play. Dawn of Justice is a massive event
movie, so Warner Bros. intends to switch things
up by following that with a lesser known title.
Fury director David Ayer had been rumored to be
helming the Suicide Squad movie—which follows
a group of supervillains—and Warner Bros.’ press
release today confirms that he will indeed be
directing the comics adaptation. A highly exciting
choice.
After Suicide Squad we get Wonder Woman on
June 23, 2017, which is shaping up to be the very
first female-led superhero movie of the modern
era. Gal Gadot has already been cast as the
character with her first appearance poised to be
in Batman v Superman , and it’s strange to think
that even though Marvel has already had an 11-
film head start on DC, the latter will be the first
out of the gate with a female superhero movie.
Justice League Part One will be released on
November 17, 2017 with Zack Snyder returning to
direct and Henry Cavill , Ben Affleck, and Amy
Adams reprising their roles as Superman, Batman,
and Lois Lane respectively. Moreover, Snyder will
also direct Justice League Part Two for release
on June 14, 2019.
2018 will give us two brand new superheroes, as
Ezra Miller will lead The Flash for release on
March 23, 2018 and Jason Momoa will lead
Aquaman for release on July 27, 2018. Momoa is
already confirmed to appear as his character in
Batman v Superman , and I would not be
surprised if Miller is introduced briefly as The
Flash in that film as well. This casting news can
also further put to rest any speculation that the
DC television universe and the DC movie universe
might be connected, as The CW’s The Flash will
continue to be its own thing.
Dwayne Johnson will make his superhero debut in
Shazam, opening on April 5, 2019, and as
previously reported Johnson will be playing the
villainous Black Adam in the comics adaptation.
Then in 2020, we will get another double dose of
new superhero movies as Cyborg opens on April
3, 2020 and a Green Lantern reboot opens on
June 19, 2020. Ray Fisher has already been cast
as Cyborg to appear in Batman v Superman , but
the new star of Green Lantern has yet to be
announced.
Phew, that’s some pretty massive news huh
folks? Marvel Studios is definitely going big with
a Civil War storyline for its next phase, but DC
has some tricks up its sleeve as well. I, for one,
am excited to see Warner Bros. build out its own
superhero universe, and this slate of films is
certainly a promising start. We’ll start to get a
very good idea of what this DC Movie Universe
will look like when we see Batman v Superman:
Dawn of Justice hit theaters on March 25, 2016.
Sound off with your thoughts on this flood of
news below!
