This is not a music blog but what the hell!
Billboard has released their year end charts,
and many of them are pretty much what
you’d expect. After looking at the rankings of
both Spotify and iTunes , Billboard’s lists are
fairly similar, though not exactly the same.
The magazine published dozens of charts,
with some focusing on specific genres, while
others are more general, such as the Top 200
Albums (adapted in part from the Billboard
200), Hot 100 Songs (taken from the chart of
the same name), and both Top Artists and Top
New Artists, which get their rankings from a
formula that combines several charts.
The full lists are longer than five slots, but for
the moment we’ll just look at a few highlights:
The covers for the ‘Frozen soundtrack,
Beyoncé’s self-titled album, and Taylor Swift’s
’1989′.
Top 200 Albums
1. Various Artists - Frozen soundtrack
2. Beyoncé - Beyoncé
3. Taylor Swift - 1989
4. One Direction - Midnight Memories
5. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2
This is actually a great example of how the
end-of-year charts are more complex than just
a straight look at sales numbers. While
Taylor’s album outsold Beyoncé’s by quite a
bit (almost three times as much by now), it
didn’t have the same presence on the
Billboard 200. Beyoncé’s self-titled album has
been on the charts all year, going up and
down depending on what else was released
and how well certain singles are doing, while
Swift’s latest has only been on the charts for
less than two months. Either way, nothing can
beat the unstoppable Disney soundtrack.
Hot 100 Songs
1. Pharrell – “Happy”
2. Katy Perry – “Dark Horse (ft. Juicy J)”
3. John Legend – “All Of Me”
4. Iggy Azalea – “Fancy (ft. Charli XCX)”
5. OneRepublic – “Counting Stars”
“Happy” was not only the Hot 100 song of the
year, it was also the best-selling of 2014. The
has song sold millions of copies since being
released last year, and went on to be one of
the biggest and most accessible radio hits in
memory. Katy Perry and John Legend’s hits
were also well-liked across different market
segments, but nowhere near as much as
Pharrell’s Oscar-nominated hit.
Top New Artists
1. Iggy Azalea
2. Sam Smith
3. 5 Seconds of Summer
4. Meghan Trainor
5. Bastille
