After posting one of the strongest Christmas Day
totals of the last decade, the domestic box office
went on to claim the best post-holiday frame ever
this weekend with over $208 million in overall
earnings. That tops the all-time record from
2009: the year that Avatar , Sherlock Holmes and
Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel
dominated the chart. On this historic weekend,
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
claimed its second consecutive top ten title with
an estimated $41.4 million, while new releases
Into the Woods and Unbroken each brought in
over $31 million in what proved to be a very close
race for second place.
